The elephant in the room | Public Health & Non-Essential Spaces

We’ve made it to the beginning of September and a season of transition in so many ways. I will preface this elephant-like post by asking that you read it word for word, before reacting. If you find yourself in a heightened state of emotion at any point, take a step back instead of leaning into your keyboard.

Yesterday, the Ford Government announced that non-essential businesses (like ours) will be required to ask patrons for proof of vaccination or medical exemption starting September 22nd. If you haven’t seen the news, you can check out this article that outlines the major points: https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ontario-reveals-vaccine-passport-system-for-restaurants-gyms-and-theatres-here-s-what-you-need-to-know-1.5569198 This article also has links regarding how you will present your proof of vaccination, and any other information on this decision that is available to us at this time

As a small business owner, I am equal parts relieved and torn. Relieved because this means we’ll get to see our members who were hesitant to return to practice without this measure in place. And torn because I am someone who has believed in pro-choice, in every sense of the term, since I was old enough to know what those words meant.

Now that statement alone may turn you off from engaging in practice and business with someone like me. And that’s okay. That’s the beauty of pro-choice. I know that I, and the business I breathe life into every day, will not be a breath of fresh air for all. I fully anticipate we may lose followers, subscribers and customers - and am prepared for the repercussions of that, because I am making this choice from a place of confidence and integrity for myself. I commend EVERYONE, who does the same for themselves. This choice is not one that divides or separates. It is one that allows me to strengthen the connection I have to the community that I strive to build each and every day.

At The Aura House, we have always done everything we can to foster a space of peace, acceptance, non-judgment and growth while also being in compliance with public health measures passed down to us from our Government.

In the weeks to come, we will be working out the details of how proof of vaccination or medical exemption will work within our space, and appreciate you for your patience, understanding, and kindness as we do.
