Setting Up Your Space for Virtual Practice
Many of us have become well-accustomed to virtual practice since the beginning of the pandemic, and even though we can be back in-studio, many of us are still practicing from home. One of our goals at The Aura House has always been to create a safe and comfortable space for our community to explore the many wellness modalities we have on offer here— and we want to be able to extend that same energy to our friends joining us online. We’ve compiled a list of some of our tips for setting up your space for a safe and comfortable virtual practice until we can all be reunited once more!
Tip #1: Ask for some space and quiet
If you live with other people, politely let them know that you are about to start your practice and ask if they could give you some space and quiet until your practice is complete. This might mean shutting the door to the room you’re in and asking them to only knock if it's an emergency. It could also mean finding a space where you can remain uninterrupted by pets if you have any.
Tip #2: Have your props handy
If you’re doing any physical practice, it’s never a bad idea to have your props nearby in case you decide that you’d like some support in any of the postures you find yourself in. If you don’t have props at home, have no fear. Head over to our BYOP (Bring Your Own Props) blog post to learn how you can quickly DIY some props from items you probably have around the house.
Tip #3: Make sure you can see your device clearly and turn on do-not-disturb or airplane mode
Give yourself extra time before class starts to explore a few different options for positioning your device so that you can see it from a standing position or seated position. Having the screen about hip to belly button height is usually good, so try placing it on top of a chair or on something that will lift it up from the floor without putting it too high.
Tip #4: Move furniture out of the way to give yourself enough room to blossom
Giving yourself a few extra minutes before class to move that chair, nudge that laundry out of the way, and ensure that you have enough room to stretch out your arms and legs without knocking into anything is important to both your comfort and safety. You don’t want to feel crowded at any point in your practice.
Tip #5: Bring items into the space that will help you in your practice
Maybe you light some incense or turn on a diffuser with your favourite essential oils. Maybe you bring your crystals and set them up around your space in a way that aligns with your intentions. Whatever it is you choose, make sure that the way you set up your space feels right for you.
Above all, the most important part of setting up your space for your virtual practice is making sure you feel good in it. We can’t wait until everyone can be back together in-person again. Until then, from our Auras to yours, we wish you a happy practice!
